Fees & questions
What things cost, and how we work
Our revenue comes solely from service and consulting fees. We take no commissions, referral fees, or revenue-share from any hospital — so the pathway we outline for you is the one that fits you, not the one that pays us.
Fees
What will my care in China cost in total?
Every engagement begins with a written, itemized quote that separates three categories:
- Hospital charges — set by the institution in China and paid to the institution. We do not mark them up.
- Our service fee — the coordination fee, fixed in writing before you commit to anything.
- Third-party costs — travel, accommodation, and any interpretation or translation beyond the included scope, shown at cost.
We do not publish medical prices on this website: every case is different, and charges vary by hospital, provider and treatment plan. Your written quote, prepared for your specific case, is the binding figure.
What does the service fee cover?
Pathway review, appointment coordination, preparation of your documentation, translation of your reports, on-the-ground coordination during your visit, and the follow-up handover package for your own physician. Anything outside that scope is quoted separately, in advance, in writing.
Is the pathway review free?
No. The pathway review is a paid first step; its fee is confirmed in writing before you proceed, and nothing else is charged until you approve a written quote.
How and when do I pay?
Hospital charges are paid directly to the institution, and you receive the institution's original invoice. Our coordination fee is invoiced separately. Payment methods and refund terms are stated in your written quote before any payment is due.
Why don't you publish a list of hospitals?
Pathways are matched to each patient's situation, timing, and the current availability of the relevant specialty. We describe the systems, cities, and specialties we coordinate across, and your written pathway outline names the specific institution proposed for you before you decide.
Insurance
Can you bill my insurer directly?
No. We provide claims documentation assistance: we organize and translate the invoices, reports, and receipts you need to submit a claim to your insurer yourself. Payment and reimbursement arrangements remain between you and your insurer, and coverage decisions are your insurer's.
Will my provincial plan or insurer cover this?
Provincial health plans generally do not cover elective care abroad, and many travel policies exclude planned treatment. Check with your insurer before booking — we provide the documentation you need to submit a claim yourself.
Responsibilities & what-ifs
Who is responsible for my medical care?
The institution and physicians who receive you in China are responsible for your clinical care, and clinical decisions are made by them together with you. China Care Gateway is a coordination service: we do not provide medical advice, and we are not a medical provider.
What if complications arise during my care?
Clinical complications are managed by the treating institution under its own protocols and terms, which are set out in the documents you sign with the institution before care begins. Our role is coordination: communication support, documentation, and assistance in organizing any additional arrangements you ask us to make. Standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Ask your insurer specifically about medical-travel or complications cover, and we can discuss documentation for that during your pathway review.
What if there is a dispute about my care?
Disputes about clinical care are between you and the treating institution under the institution's terms. Disputes about our coordination services are governed by our service agreement with you, which you receive and sign before any fee is payable. We will always help you assemble the documentation you need, in English, whichever route a question takes.
What if I cancel or change my plans?
Our cancellation terms are stated in your service agreement before you pay anything: coordination work already performed is chargeable, work not yet performed is not. Hospital and third-party bookings follow the cancellation terms of the institution or provider concerned, which we show you at the time of booking.
What if screening finds something serious?
You decide where to be treated. Many patients return home for treatment; we never require treatment in China. Your translated report and handover package go with you either way.
What happens after I return home?
You receive a follow-up handover package: your reports and records from China, organized and translated, ready for your own physician. If your physician has questions that require contacting the institution in China, we coordinate that communication as part of the handover.
Getting started
How do I begin?
Send a short text inquiry — a few sentences about what you are looking for. Please do not send medical records at this stage; if your pathway proceeds, records are exchanged later through a separate channel arranged by our team. First reply within 24–48 hours.
Do I need a visa?
Entry rules for China and Hainan change often, so we do not print them here. We confirm the current requirements for your nationality during your pathway review, before anything is booked.
How do you choose institutions?
By licensing, an established international patient department, English-speaking physicians, and a track record with cases like yours. Your written pathway outline names the institution proposed for you before you decide.
Who interprets and translates?
Our coordinators work in English and Mandarin. Medical records are translated by qualified human translators, and every translation is reviewed before it is released.
Can a family member come with me?
Yes. We coordinate logistics for one companion as part of most pathways; the details are set out in your written quote.
How do I complain about your service?
Write to hello@chinacaregateway.com and we will respond. Privacy complaints may also be directed to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada — see our Privacy Notice.
